Elevating Agriculture Technology EVERETT
Students enrolled in this Boston Design Academy program will focus on creating in-home gardening devices that could aid community members battling food insecurity by Elevating Agriculture Technologies (EAT). This program will be led by Lead Instructor Courtland Ferreria-Douglas and Assistant Instructor Ahmed Alananzeh.

Elevating Agriculture Technology is a strategy to combine social challenges in tech education and food management to deal with some of the essential needs within the community. We want students to innovate smart technologies specific to urban agriculture gardening in tandem with growing their own gardens. This dual approach of learning distinguishes EAT from other urban agriculture community and local gardening activities and programs. Students will focus on product design and development to elevate and create personal gardening technologies that incorporate lighting, water, and pest control.
BDA students will gain an awareness of local, state, and national initiatives focused on food insecurity, current urban gardening practices, and participate in a robust guest speaker series that includes community members, medical professionals, urban farmers, and government representatives.
They will also participate in design thinking workshops, explore NASA and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) patents, learn product design utilizing CAD software and rapid prototyping techniques, program electronic components, and use 3D printing technologies.

- Understanding of Design Thinking and Rapid Prototyping techniques
- Exploration of NASA and USDA Patent Portfolios
- Experience utilizing advance software and hardware tools
Social Justice Acuity
- History of laws and policies that have impacted minority communities
- Knowledge of how to advocate for and improve community outcomes
- Development confidence to speak with industry professionals and community leaders
Students must be enrolled in a Boston Public School, METCO, or participating in PIC as a summer employee. Students should show an interest in STEAM career exploration particularly engineering and industrial design. All students with an interest in a STEAM career are welcome!
As part of our commitment to project based learning TSN will supply students with kits containing the following items. Students are responsible for returning devices at the end of the program.*

- Arts & Crafts supplies
*As participating in EAT qualifies as a summer employment opportunity, students are expected to actively participate in online course work and in-person field trips, any student in violation will be required to return all equipment and no longer able to participate.
🎓 Planting Seeds, Parts of a Plant, Food Deserts, Nutrients
The Agriculture/Gardening subsection of EAT Everett consists of weekly lessons about farming and its development overtime. Students will learn about the history of agriculture and how technology adapted in order to make farming more efficient. Additionally, students will be planting, growing, and maintaining several different plants using both the information from the lessons and the research they conduct throughout the summer.

Fusion 360 Projects
The Fusion 360 subsection of EAT Everett is set of lessons using the Autodesk 3D design software. Students will learn the basic skills necessary to use the software through projects that develop their understanding of Computer Aided Design (CAD). They will also create designs and complete projects that compliment other aspects of the program (i.e. technology to improve their Agriculture/Gardening skills).

Arduino Kit Exploration
The Arduino Kit Exploration subsection of EAT Everett contains lessons about microcontrollers and their uses. Students will learn to wire different components to Arduino microcontrollers and program them using software on their laptops. They will be using sensors/modules that allow them to collect information and complete a plethora of other tasks.
